Barleyfield Beef was established in July 2000 and
is run entirely by the family of Arthur Dewar, Jane Bellinge and
daughter Laura. All the cattle supplied by Barleyfield Beef are
bred and reared on family properties north of Gingin, Western
Australia. Gingin is situated 150 kms north of Perth and 40kms from
the coast. With a 700mm rainfall, the diversification of land-types,
soils, pastures, breed types, mating and calving periods, Barleyfield
Beef has been able to achieve the production of prime beef during
the full 12 months of the year.
The Dewar family have been farming cattle in the Gingin
District since the early 1850s on a tract of land called the Dewar
flats. Arthur Dewar, co- principal of Barleyfield Beef, represents
the fourth generation of Dewar cattle producers in the area.
The Dewar family farms consists of 1000 hectares (2500
acres), located on two farms situated between 7 and 15 kms north
of the Dewar flats, in and overlooking the rich and scenic Beermullah
lakes . "Kingsbrook" previously known as "Glenmore" was surveyed
in 1900 and has been in the Dewar name since the 1960's. This fertile
300 hectare property is home to Arthur Dewar's "Bootine Simmental
Stud" and the entire Simmental and Simmental cross herd. The "Yardarm
Limousin Stud" and the commercial Limousin and Limousin cross herd
on "Newspring", a picturesque, 700 hectare property situated on
the hills above the Beermullah lakes.
Over 550 cows are mated on the Dewar family farms each year in
a bi-aunnal mating. The herd comprises of: 100 stud Simmental females;
100 stud Limousin females; and 30 stud Piedmontese females. The
remaining commercial females comprise largely of Simmental, Limousin
and Piedmontese cross females as well as Shorthorn, Murray Grey
and Angus females. All females are mated to bulls bred out of the
studs and are selectively mated in order to optimise the carcase
qualities of their calves.
"Newspring" is also home to the Newspring Cattle Sale
Centre where bull sales and female sales are held on a regular basis.
